Wednesday St. Remy de Provence

We are on our way to St. Remy. It was home to 2 famous people. Vincent Van Gogh and Nostradamus. Van Gogh painted Starry Night and Irises while in an insane asylum. It also has a huge market on Wednesdays. 






Van Gogh lived in Saint Remy de Provence (In an asylum) and painted over 100 paintings. After the market we went to the insane asylum St Paul de Mausole where Van Gogh lived. It has a beautiful walkway with copies of his most famous paintings. The museum was closed for lunch so we were unable to go inside to see his preserved room. 












Next we went to Les Baux de Provence. We were all struck by the view as we rounded a corner.The beautiful white rocks jut out from the middle of no where. It is a medieval  town. It’s known for its beauty within the Alpilles Mountains. They have a cave with a light show of the works of Van Gogh and DeVeermeer. Unfortunately, that show was over for today. We will be back to see the light show and explore the town.





The ride from Les Baux de Provence to Eygalieres was very windy and narrow. The roads reminded us of those we were on when we traveled through Monument Valley and Bryce Canyon. We felt like we were driving through a National Park. 

We finally arrived in Eygalieres. The village is surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of the Alpillies Mountains, with olive groves, green valleys and vine fields. Here and there you will see tastefully, restored residences. Many celebrities, including Hugh Grant, have fallen in love with this village and have built homes there. We had a great lunch at LeProgres, an outside café. The mussels were delicious. Steve and Jeff enjoyed the sauce so much that they asked for straws!













Next we went Eyguieres. It was supposed to have a charming town center. We drove around. Then we were winding around one way streets and came to a very narrow archway. Jeff got out to “direct” Steve. That was our first red flag…Jeff said there was plenty of room flag #2 until there wasn’t…



Thank goodness we have no deductible on the rental car! We left town as quickly as we came. 

Well for a day that was supposed to be just a trip to a local market, we left the house at 9:30 and returned at 5:30 and walked almost 10,000 steps!

Light dinner of our market goodies and 5 Crowns. Susie won tonight. Now the scores are:

Steve and Susie 4, me 2, Jeff 1…Will Jeff ever win a 2nd game?

  Day 1–2: From NewYork/Connecticut to Edinburgh June 10–11, 2026 Our long-awaited Scotland adventure began on June 10 as Steve and I met up with Jeff and Susie and headed to JFK Airport for our overnight flight to Edinburgh.  June 12, 2026 – Stirling Castle and a Scottish Welcome Good morning, Edinburgh! Steve and Jeff went out exploring early this morning while Susie and I stayed back to get ready for the day. During their walk, they visited St. Mary’s Cathedral. Construction took five years and was completed in 1885 at a cost of £110,000, which would be roughly equivalent to several million dollars today. One interesting fact we learned is that no building in Edinburgh is permitted to be taller than the Castle, helping preserve the city’s historic skyline. At 12:45, we met the other 20 travelers on our Tauck tour in the hotel lobby. The group seems wonderful, with most people around our age, along with a few who are younger and a few who are older.   Saturday, June 13, 2026 – Edinburgh, Scotland We had a leisurely breakfast at 7:00 a.m. because it was wheels up at 8:00 for a full day of sightseeing of Edinburgh. Our first stop was a private tour of Palace of Holyroodhouse. The palace is magnificent and steeped in centuries of history. It serves as the official Scottish residence of King Charles III. Since the King is not currently in residence, we were fortunate to be allowed to tour his home. He is expected to arrive later this month for Royal Week. No photographs were permitted inside the palace. Tauk gave us a souvenir tour book so I have included some pictures.  The dining room was set for fourteen guests with beautiful green china designed to complement the wall color. We walked through the actual sitting room where members of the Royal Family receive guests before dinner.
