French Riviera 2024

 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27, 2024

It’s just under 3 hours to Cannes, our first stop on the French Riviera. The ride is rich with farmland, grape vines, fruit trees. Spring is here in the south of France. All the tree have their leaves now. We see fewer flowering trees. We have become desensitized to the beauty of rock formations. Off in the distance we’ll see a castle high on the hill. It’s another medieval village. 

Our first stop is Cannes. The film festival is in May, so it shouldn’t be crowded. At first it had a tacky Miami vibe with palm tree lined streets and high rise apartments. Then we made our way down to the beach. At first sight, your eye is drawn to magnificent boats anchored off the shoreline. Across the street are high end stores like Louis Vuitton,  Ferragamo and Hermes. It’s also home to many multi story hotels and condominiums. There is a stone promenade along the beach area. We parked and took in the  gorgeous view. 

 







Next we are going to Grasse. It is the perfume capital of France. Dickie would love it here. We had lunch in a town square. After lunch we went into a perfumer. He asked us our favorite. scents. Susie and I both found a scent we liked! We walked along the winding streets and found several chocolate shops. There are no small solid chocolate eggs anywhere we have visited. They are all filled with Nutella, crispy, or ganache. We’re looking for the solid foils strapped Easter eggs. 














Next stop is our hotel in Saint Paul de Vance. We are staying at Domaine Du Mas De Pierre. It is a beautiful Resort. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and there are huge herb gardens. We toured the grounds and the spa area. We didn’t realize it was a spa and didn’t bring bathing suits. Oh well… We had a cocktail on the terrace. We forgot about watching the sunset and caught the tail end of it. We had dinner at the bistro at the resort. Early to bed. Early start tomorrow. We’re going to Monte Carlo in Monaco in the morning.

  Day 1–2: From NewYork/Connecticut to Edinburgh June 10–11, 2026 Our long-awaited Scotland adventure began on June 10 as Steve and I met up with Jeff and Susie and headed to JFK Airport for our overnight flight to Edinburgh.  June 12, 2026 – Stirling Castle and a Scottish Welcome Good morning, Edinburgh! Steve and Jeff went out exploring early this morning while Susie and I stayed back to get ready for the day. During their walk, they visited St. Mary’s Cathedral. Construction took five years and was completed in 1885 at a cost of £110,000, which would be roughly equivalent to several million dollars today. One interesting fact we learned is that no building in Edinburgh is permitted to be taller than the Castle, helping preserve the city’s historic skyline. At 12:45, we met the other 20 travelers on our Tauck tour in the hotel lobby. The group seems wonderful, with most people around our age, along with a few who are younger and a few who are older.   Saturday, June 13, 2026 – Edinburgh, Scotland We had a leisurely breakfast at 7:00 a.m. because it was wheels up at 8:00 for a full day of sightseeing of Edinburgh. Our first stop was a private tour of Palace of Holyroodhouse. The palace is magnificent and steeped in centuries of history. It serves as the official Scottish residence of King Charles III. Since the King is not currently in residence, we were fortunate to be allowed to tour his home. He is expected to arrive later this month for Royal Week. No photographs were permitted inside the palace. Tauk gave us a souvenir tour book so I have included some pictures.  The dining room was set for fourteen guests with beautiful green china designed to complement the wall color. We walked through the actual sitting room where members of the Royal Family receive guests before dinner.
